The Green Giant Arborvitae is a great screening shrub which is known to grow 3 to 5 feet per year. But, there is a trick to that. You cant just plant it and expect it to grow fast like a weed. For it to actually to grow that fast, these great green beauties need a little TLC and I’m about to show you how.
I have been wanting to write this post for some time because I’m so excited to share the progress of our Green Giants in the past few years. While everyone laughed at us when we first planted these tiny babies, no one is laughing now, and instead, we get compliments from our friends and neighbors.
Back in 2015 when we just moved into our brand new house, the neighborhood was brand new too, with just 10 homes, there were hardly any trees, especially between property lines since most trees were ripped out by the developer. We were pretty anxious to plant some screening shrubs and we didn’t want to spend a fortune.
Our one acre lot would require a lot of trees, we needed 80 to be exact. If we were lucky enough to score each tree at $25 or even $15 a piece, it would still cost us a nice chunk of change, and while its not a huge fortune, I wanted to spend less, much less. After all, we are the hobby horticulturists.
We opted to buy some trees on ebay, yup, ebay. We got 60 baby Green Giants, and after running out, we quickly bought another 20.
60 Green Giants (Arborvitae)
We planted our first border of 25 trees between our house and next door neighbor’s house, spaced 5 feet apart.
We began our strict watering routine. We installed a soaker hose which ran on a timer every other day as the summers get really hot here in Charlotte, NC, and we wanted to make sure our trees started growing a healthy root system without drying out.
As you see here, our Green Giants Arborvitae, grew at least 2 to 3 feet in a year. However, we were not impressed with the growth, we thought the trees should be a little fuller and a little greener. We figured the basic fertilizer was a bit on the weak side and now that we had even more Green Giants planted inside the fence, we needed to get a little more aggressive with our nutrient boosting feeding schedule.
We began a strict monthly fertilization schedule with Espoma HT50 Organic 4-3-4 Holly Tone Fertilizer
Its actually amazing how fast this stuff works, it boosts growth pretty much overnight.
As you see in the pic above, the growth really picked up. The trees were now a good 6 feet tall, even though it was just with a long thin tip, they were still healthy green and bushy.
Huge progress for practically planting twigs.
We still continued fertilizing once a month during the growth season.
